Frequently Asked Questions?
Q: Why is this Project necessary?
A: The existing bridge was
completed in 1950 and has exceeded its life expectance of 59 years. Maintenance
and operation costs have increased substantially due to structural
deterioration and obsolescence of both machinery and equipment.
Q: When will the Project start, and how long will it take?
A:
The Project will start March 29th, 2007, with anticipated completion in the
spring of 2010.
Q: How will this project affect the residents in this area?
A:
During the construction of replacing the existing bridge the impacts towards
residents will be at a minimum, however, if there are any lane closures or
detours there will be a notification sent out well in advance.
Q: What kind of detours and closures can I expect?
A: There
will be isolated short term lane closures at various locations throughout the
project during the first several months of construction. These lane closures
will result in one way traffic using flagmen to direct the flow in
one-direction at a time through short sections of the work zone.
Q: What are the alternative routes if the bridge is closed?
A:
When it becomes necessary to close the bridge to traffic, which will happen
should the existing bridge require emergency repair, or during the placement of
bridge beams for the new main bridge a detour will be established according to
the route provided by the Pinellas County Department of Public Works. This
detour will route traffic across the intracoastal waterway via S.R. 688
